What motion design tools are for

Most designers don’t need to become motion designers. They need a landing page hero that moves, a product teaser for social, a loading animation, or a showreel that doesn’t look like a slideshow. That’s the job these tools do. They take something you already designed and make it move.

What to look for in a motion design tool

Start with the export. Video covers social and decks. GIF still works in places nothing else does. Lottie is the one to check if the animation is going into a website or app, because the files stay light and sharp at any size. A tool that only does one of these will cost you a second tool later.

Then look at how you start. Importing from Figma saves you rebuilding your design. Templates save you from a blank timeline. If the tool uses AI, find out whether the result stays editable or arrives as a finished clip, because the client will ask for one change.

Last, look at how it handles a team. Comments on the file, shared assets and batch export matter more than they sound once you’re making twenty versions instead of one. Most of these tools start free, so check what sits behind the paid plan before you build a workflow around it.

A few worth studying

Jitter. A motion design tool that runs in the browser, with nothing to install. You can import from Figma, start from one of 400+ free templates, and export to 4K video, GIF or Lottie. It also has AI features for generating effects and animating images. By its own count, over 20,000 creative teams use it.

For real-time 3D visuals and effects, Endless Tools sits in Assets. For animating vector graphics, Quiver sits under AI Tools.

Motion work also needs somewhere to live. See how animator, director and 3D artist portfolios present it, or browse interactive portfolio websites where the motion is the design.
